A Message From Your Coach

If I had to pick one quality that reveals a person’s acting potential, it would be empathy. The more deeply you can put yourself in someone else’s shoes, the more fully alive your character becomes. Empathy is the key to unlocking your talent and expressing it in a way that’s both beautiful and uniquely yours. It’s step one – always. The very first thing. It anchors you to the person whose world you're about to live in. It’s the launching pad from which your best work awaits.

In real life, it's often the same thing. And in the case of you and me – the two of us – it’s a direct parallel. I know how important this process is to you, how close to your heart these college auditions are. I know because I’ve been where you are. For me, my college audition journey represented, at its core, who I was as an actor and the potential I carried inside.

I was lucky in high school. I had a coach who really understood me. He encouraged me, challenged me, and walked beside me through the wonderful, terrifying, and ultimately exciting college application process. From deep monologue work to interview prep, from refining my college essay to helping me share with those writing my letters of recommendation what my schools were actually looking for, he was there. He is still the best teacher I've ever had, acting or otherwise.

Most students aren’t that lucky, though. They navigate this time on instinct, or based on what they've seen on TikTok, read on Reddit, or heard from a well-meaning school counselor. If they’re fortunate, maybe they’ve attended one of those college audition weekends and picked up a few pointers. But while many students (at least Musical Theater ones) have years of private voice lessons or dance company experience, most students wanting to go into theater have never had real, personal acting coaching. It’s their one weak spot. It’s also the thing that’s going to get them in.

That’s why I’m here.

My acting coach changed everything for me. Together, we can do the same for you.

I won’t promise you’ll get into your dream program (although many of my students have). What I can promise is this: I’m here to walk with you. I’m here to draw out your very best work, every step of the way. To help that spark inside you shine – whether it’s in your audition, your interview, your college essay, or the recommendation letters that tell your story.

Because just like an audience, colleges aren’t looking for a character. They’re looking for a real, authentic human being who is ready to light the world on fire. They’re looking for you.

Let’s do this.

– David

David Michael Hoover has spent over ten years helping young actors find their voice – and their spotlight – in the college audition process. A graduate of NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts (where he earned the Outstanding Achievement in Studio award from the Lee Strasberg Theatre & Film Institute), David knows firsthand how big this moment can feel. His students have been accepted into top programs like USC, NYU, DePaul, Ohio University, and Baldwin Wallace – and more importantly, they’ve walked into those auditions confident, prepared, and fully themselves.
